(English) Smart Axiata, Google, GSMA celebrate digital literacy pilot programme achievement

To help promote digital safety in the Kingdom, Smart Axiata piloted a digital literacy and internet safety programme that benefited around 1,500 high school students from grade 10 and 11 across Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham and Kampong Chhnang provinces.

During the programme, students learned how to produce entertaining videos, write scripts, shoot and edit videos using smartphones. The videos produced by students had been posted on ‘Smart for Cambodia’ Facebook page and followers voted for their favorite video covering the topics of digital literacy and internet safety.

Three teams, ‘Don’t Believe’, ‘Setting Complicated Password’ and ‘My Mother Got Cheated with USD 10,000 Offer’, from Techo Hun Sen Beok Kok High School and Bunrany Hun Sen Rolear B’ier High School, received 1,000 USD each.

Heng Sophearom, from Bunrany Hun Sen Rolear B’ier High School, said, “I really enjoyed participating in the program. It was fun learning about this new topic and then producing videos with my classmates. I hope to be able to share this new knowledge with my friends and family in my community.”

Out of the nine participating schools, the Techo Hun Sen Beok Kok High School from Kampong Cham and Hun Sen Bun Rany Ro Leap Pa Ea High School from Kampong Chhnang with the highest number of submissions received a USD 3,750 in-kind prize of educational material for having the most video submissions once the workshops in the provinces concluded.

“At Smart, we believe that online safety and responsible digital citizenship are crucial components when promoting mobile adoption in Cambodia. Together with MoEYS, MPTC and various partners, we envision building on this pilot to create more positive impacts in the communities that we operate in through improved content and online platforms in future. I hope that all those who attended the pilot will be our ambassadors to promote these important concepts among their peers as we look forward to a more digitally aware society,” said Feiruz Ikhwan, chief financial officer of Smart Axiata.

In the first phase, MoEYS has identified three schools in each province and nominated three teachers per school to participate in the training, led by the alumnus from SmartEdu, who organized and implemented the training. The training program by Google included basic digital literacy coaching and important reminders about password security, online threats and digital citizenship.
