Dart Flight School : Phnom Penh CodeLab

Dart Flight School : Phnom Penh CodeLab is an event focusing on how to enable Cambodian developers to start off with “Dart”, that took place on 22th February 2014 from 1:00 P.M – 5:00 P.M  at InSTEDD in Phnom Penh. This event was organized by Google Developer Group Phnom Penh, and gave local developers the opportunity to learn more about coding, take part in hand-ons activities, and present their first flight of dart app.

What is Dart ?

Dart is defined as “class based and object oriented, without being dogmatic”. It is basically a new platform made for scalable web app engineering. Dart helps you building modern web apps with a new language, core libraries, and tools such as a package manager, editor, and a compiler to JavaScript. In february this year, various developer communities around the world also hosted some Dart Flight School events.

Here in Cambodia, the Dart Flight School event welcomed over 50 participants, with a major IT students attendance, coming from various universities across Phnom Penh. All attendees had to bring their own laptop and to download Dart SDK and Dart Editor from the dedicated website : www.dartlang.org. They had then to install the program on their own computer, and start coding ! You can also discover an introduction about Dart here to get more information.

Speaking about the coding process, we went through two different steps. First one was focused on “Dart Hello World App”, meaning we had to open the program (and that’s also when we got a free T-Shirt !). Second one focused on Dart CodeLab: a “Pizza Programming Competition” where you had to to quickly produce a small dart program in order to win a prize. At this stage, any participant who came up with a small dart program could present it. 10 people presented their app and then all participants had to vote for the best one. The organizing team then picked 5 winners who had the chance to win a prize.

To conclude, I’d say this event not only gives more knowledge and experience, but also brings more fun for any tech savvy in Phnom Penh ! Next month, local Google Developer Group will is lauching the “Women Techmakers” program in Phnom Penh, celebrating in this way the International Women Day. Don’t miss the opportunity to have a good time and to meet a lot of “geeky” people passionate about technology !
