VannDa and Tena most popular Cambodian artists as Spotify celebrates one year in the country

Celebrating its first birthday in Cambodia, Spotify released fresh data showing that VannDa has topped the charts as the most played local artist and the most played Cambodian artist abroad, mainly in the US, Indonesia and Thailand.

Spotify has also been a go-to platform for the fans of the singer and songwriter Tena, who became the second most played Cambodian artist. Since Spotify launched in Cambodia, the amount of his songs played online has nearly doubled.

Cambodians have also enjoyed the music of Sinn Sisamouth who became the third most listened to artist in Cambodia. His song “Ma Pi Nok” was the most played Cambodian song on Spotify of 2021. Closing the list of the top five played artists were Manith and Smallworld Smallband.

“Since launching in February 2021, we’ve had a very warm welcome in Cambodia from users and artists alike. It is amazing to see that our platform attracts Cambodian artists as well as the local audiences and gives more opportunities to Cambodian artists to be recognized internationally,” said Niklas Lundberg, Head of New Markets at Spotify.

As for the international scene, the most played foreign artists since the launch of Spotify in Cambodia have been BTS, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and Ariana Grande. The top five songs played in Cambodia were STAY by Justin Bieber and The Kid LAROI, Drivers License, Good 4 U and Deja Vu by Olivia Rodrigo, and double take by dhruv, closely followed by releases by BTS and Giveon.

“Only 1 year into Spotify’s presence in Cambodia, it’s evident that there’s an appetite to consume both local, regional and international artists, with VannDa, BTS and BLACKPINK being on the list over the most played artists, alongside artists such as Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo. We look forward to continuing to connect fans with the artists they love, and equip local artists with the tools and insights that enable them to reach new audiences.” said Julia Levander, Communications Manager, New Markets at Spotify.

In addition to having access to both free and premium Spotify accounts, Cambodians can also tap into a recently introduced feature ‘Lyrics’, a simple, interactive and shareable new product allowing users to access lyrics to their favorite songs directly in the Spotify app. Lyrics to popular songs are available in their original languages, including Khmer.
