Globally, Technovation has made a name for itself and for young, budding female tech entrepreneurs under its programme that aims to increase the number of girls in entrepreneurship through education.
Since landing on the sunny shores of Cambodia in 2014, Technovation Cambodia has brought to young girls from ages 10-18 a well-rounded technology entrepreneurship competition that inspires and educates them on innovation.
The competition starts with a 12-week mentorship programme that helps participating teams develop their ideas and ends off with a national pitch with top teams having the chance to submit their innovation to the World Pitch Summit in San Francisco, California.
With the 3rd Technovation Cambodia wrapping up last month, here’s a little throwback article to relieve the joyous, exciting national pitch.
Held at the Cambodia-Korea Cooperation Center (CKCC) on 30th April, this pitching saw 23 teams passionately walking the audience through their mobile application and business models that they had tirelessly coded and planned.
The turnout of 23 teams from 27 different schools this year was a step up from the previous year that only saw 14 teams that submitted their final products.
Most of the innovations presented were focused on education, health, peace, equality, poverty and the environment. Their applications were solutions to real society problems faced in these sectors. It was certainly heartwarming to see these young, energetic females delivering brilliant ideas for the betterment of the Kingdom with such zeal on stage.
But alas, although all were impressive, it is still, after all, a pitching, and winning teams were chosen based on criteria that are used to judge across all Technovation competitions across the globe. They are:
- How their app aligns with and clearly demonstrates progress towards one of the 6 UN Sustainable Development Goals,
- Technical functionality (if the app prototype functions well)
- Quality of pitch video and message
- Demonstrated entrepreneurship: focusing on how well they showed they did user research, market analysis, and the business plan including business model
- Overall impression of the team and their submission.
And the three winning teams that made it through these intense judging against peers were:
1. First Place Winner in Junior Division – Team Techlifestyle
School: Liger Learning Centre (Organization)
App: Their app aims to provide health information for users to take care of themselves to live longer and be happier.
2. First Place Winner in Senior Division – Girls for 2morrow
School: Preah Sisowath High School-NGS (Public)
App: Their app aims to provide affordable online resources to assist student’s education since online resources are still limited.
3. Second Place Winner in Senior Division – The Square Bracket
School: CIA First International School (Private)
App: Their app aims to enable users to find teachers nearby, who can teach you to learn things outside of school.
All winning teams were awarded cash prizes and tablets to help further their learning and business ideas. Their ideas have also been submitted to Technovation Global for selection to move onto the World Pitch at San Francisco. Only 12 Global finalists will be chosen to pitch for the grand prize of USD $15,000, an increase from 2016’s USD$10,000 which will help the winner develop their app and business further.
Volunteer mentors are also continuing to work closely with each Cambodian team that is interested in developing their idea more.
