Smart Axiata, the leading telecommunications companies in the Kingdom, just recently held their second edition of API Hackathon at Emerald Hub from 1 to 3 December! This time, the event was open to the public and saw the attendance of over 30 like-minded, active coders and developers
The SmartStart API Hackathon was an opportunity for bright, talented and highly-driven individuals in the digital sector to develop new products, ventures, businesses and digital platforms that respond to the various social challenges and business opportunities currently found in the market.
Apart from receiving invaluable mentoring and guidance from experienced digital and tech experts and entrepreneurs, participants also got to hack on Smart APIs in a hands-on manner. This included SMS and Direct Operator Billing.
Delving deeper into Smart APIs, it is also known as the Application Interface Programme of Smart Axiata. Accessed through Ideamart, a platform for developers to use shared APIs and to monetise their efforts, this allows developers to use features based on either Idea Pro or Idea Apps. Idea Pro is where the API scripts are shared for users to create applications, while Idea Apps comprises of already pre-loaded applications for content providers.
On top of that, the AllApps store offers users a platform for publishing Andriod and JAVA-based applications for developers, dialog intents to add Windows and other OS-based apps to the published application overtime.
With that, the two and a half day event aimed to promoted the development of relevant mobile applications in Cambodia and raise awareness of Smart’s API so developers will be encouraged to use the platform. Ultimately, this helps Smart get connected with the promising young developers of the Kingdom, forming a cohesive pipeline of innovative ideas for Cambodians and Smart customers too.
To kick off the actual sixty-hour course of events, the Hackathon started with idea formation in the evening of the first day; based on each team’s ideas, interests and skills.
After forming their own teams and realising an overall viable idea, they started focusing on validating, prototyping and developing their idea into a full business model. To help inspire the teams as well, Ideamart also came down to present more about their platform and their successful user cases.
At the end of the Hackathon, the teams were required to take part in a pitching session in front of a judging panel; where they were required present their product, along with a demonstration.
Ultimately, ZikaZ, an online donation platform innovation, emerged victorious amongst the 9 other teams, which included Smartschool, EHelp, Me, Sousdey Cambodia,Tex-Injection, HNews, Curiosity, SmartAids and NENATION. They clinched the big cash prize of 1,000 USD and as the winners, they will also receive the opportunity to further develop their idea with Smart and the Ideamart platform.
We at Geeks in Cambodia are certainly excited for the following Hackathons to come! However, for now, you can just keep your eyes peeled on Smart Axiata’s Facebook Page here to keep up with their coming events and initiatives, or head here to learn more about Smart APIs and Ideamart.
