On June 9th last week, Everjobs, an online career portal, officially launched its operations in Phnom Penh. Backed by Rocket Internet, Everjobs’ platform provides emerging markets in Southeast Asia and Africa with thousands of career opportunities for professionals.
The site offers the right matches for both professionals and employers, by connecting job seekers to the right job opportunities through the different skills they have.
But Everjobs isn’t a new portal – in Myanmar, Rocket Internet had initially launched work.com.mm, and then rebranded the site to Everjobs after its success in the country, expanding the same business model into other economies with rapid growth.
Rocket Internet has been shaping up untapped markets for a while now, with successful ventures in Southeast Asia and Africa like Lazada, Zalora, Foodpanda, Jumia, and so on. Its network of companies in the Asia Pacific Internet Group (APACIG) and the Africa Internet Group (AIG) also oversees over 17 portfolio companies across 41 countries.
In Cambodia, Rocket Internet first tested the Kingdom’s waters in 2012, launching their e-commerce site shop.com.kh. However, the firm failed to sustain the business model, where they struggled to keep afloat. Last year, RI came back stronger than ever with online marketplace Kaymu, after having a better understanding of the Cambodian market. Now, the firm aims to take the Kingdom by storm with Everjobs.
Everjobs has already launched in 7 other countries – Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Cameroom, Bangladesh, Uganda, Ivory Coast, and Senegal.
The trend of taking on frontier markets comes as no surprise as Rocket Internet continues its approach of entering into markets where mobile and internet penetration are at an all time high. Cambodia itself is a fast growing economy, with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 7% year on year. What this means is that essentially, there are more employers who are looking for employees.
Anne Rose Dingemans, Co-Founder and Managing Director at Everjobs Cambodia, said, “We aim to facilitate the growing job market that results from a rapidly growing economy. We don’t simply want to offer a jobs platform here in Cambodia. We want to get involved with the local communities and understand their needs.”
In terms of digital trends here, Cambodia has the largest growth of active Internet users amongst countries in the Asia Pacific region, with a 414% increase since January 2014. This means that over 1/3 of Cambodians already have access to the Internet. Moreover, 47% of web traffic comes from mobile phones, while laptops and computers take up 45%.
Adding on to that, Ronald Schuurs, Co-Founder of Everjobs, said, “In Cambodia, Internet and mobile usage is growing rapidly. Smartphone penetration in the Asia Pacific region (excluding China and India) is expected to rise from 21% in 2013 to 44% in 2018 so we see an immense opportunity to create a convenient online job portal.”
Since its launch in Cambodia, Everjobs has already garnered over 16,000 unique visitors a month, 800 registered employers including Coca Cola, Nagaworld, and SMART, 1,500 CVs, and more than 2500 job listings. The platform is user-friendly, with a clean web design that makes it relatively easy for users to navigate through, and it is also fully responsive so one can easily access the site through his/her smartphone.
Everjobs works in three steps:
- Create your online profile in under 5 minutes with the CV generator – it provides you with different forms to fill for your experience, education, skills, languages, and so on.
- Search for jobs online – after selecting the different elements in the CV, the search engine will filter jobs based on what you are looking for. You can also further specify your preferred location, role, industry, or career level with the advanced filters.
- Apply for jobs online – simply click on the “apply” button, and send over your CV to the company.
Currently, the website is only available in English, with a Khmer version planned to be release in the future. Check out Everjob’s website here!
