BarCamp Asean 2017: A Retrospective

Barcamp ASEAN 2017, the highly sought-after annual regional tech conference and startup expo, just happened from 21 to 22 October 2017! Held for the tenth time in Cambodia, the event hoped to share knowledge about starting business and utilising new technologies with the young entrepreneurs of Cambodia!

Barcamp ASEAN brought benefits to students, investors, and those who have just start their businesses by inspiring them to come up with their own innovations, as well as valuable ideas and tips, such as how to think like an economist, creating a business model, understanding consumers, creating goods and services, promoting a business logo, marketing, and how to pitch your business ideas to investors.

Throughout the 10 years, BarCamp ASEAN has attracted over 31,500 people, showing the overwhelming support from those in the Kingdom. However, this year, BarCamp ASEAN saw the attendance of 4,500 people and was even graced by the presence of Her Excellency Kim Sethany, Secretary of State of Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. Furthermore, this year’s edition welcomed 80 speakers from both Cambodia and all over the region, who spoke about 70 diverse topics.

Besides this, there were around 65 Startup booths present to showcase their products and services of their new technology and innovations. This was in line with BarCamp ASEAN’s aim of encouraging young Cambodian students to showcase their innovations, step up, share their dreams and show what social solutions they have created to the public.

Adding to the usual delight, the event also invited various community partners to host an array of exciting programmes to help promote technology in Cambodia. These programmes include:

  • “Meet the Best Cambodia ICT Project in 2017” was implemented with the goal of sharing problems that they faced as a business, how they find solutions to their problems and how to understand the challenges in today’s society

  • “Digital Marketing Talk” talked about successful strategies for social media marketing and the meet up of Game Developers and the WordPress Community in the Kingdom.

  • “Introducing & Launching the NGO Technology Discounts & Donations Program in Cambodia” was also presented by TechSoup, a non-profit international network of non-governmental organisations that provides technical support and technological tools to other non-profits

Other than this, with support and cooperation from one of the leading telecommunications companies, Smart Axiata, TechTalk @BarCamp ASEAN was also introduced. Presented by 14 of the top tech ecosystem leaders, this talk discussed upon the exchange of ideas and experiences between domestic and international borders. It also explored on the potential opportunities and challenges faced in Cambodia’s Tech & Startup Ecosystem.

With another end to this event, BarCamp ASEAN would like to express their sincere gratitude to the parties who have helped make this edition a successful one and this includes the  Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC), Smart Axiata, EZECOM, and other institutes, along with the volunteers of BarCamp that have sponsored and supported the event.
