Barcamp Angkor 2017: A Retrospective

The highly anticipated Barcamp Angkor 2017 surely did not disappoint with their fourth edition! Held from 9 to 10 September at the Build Bright University’s (BBU) Siem Reap Branch, this year’s Barcamp was jam-packed with a series of exciting activities for its participants; perfect for the huge turnout of over 200 people that weekend.

As usual, this Barcamp focused on empowering young Cambodians with talks from speakers sharing on a multitude of topics; ranging from entrepreneurship, tech, startups or even anything relating to digital, all in its signature ‘unconference’ style.

Featuring 42 speakers from the Mekong Region share about 35 diverse and interesting topics and even 13 exhibition booths to showcase their products and services, participants had a multitude of avenues to network, learn new, viable skills and get inspired.

On top of that, the top 10 topics that were widely attended and most sought out for during the event were:

  1. “Understanding of the Startup Ecosystem in Cambodia and the region” by Mr. Be Chantra, Co-Founder of Emerald HUB

  1. “Meet Startup Founders and Best ICT Projects in Cambodia” by 12 different startups in a roundtable talk format

  1. “How to make an effective advertising via Facebook” by Vun Vithuroath, CEO of SFPDA IT Service

  1. “Overview of Business Canvas Model” by Mr. Pha Sina, Co-Founder of Adoredbiz

  1. “Basic Photography” by Jack, a freelance photographer

  1. “Preparing for scholarship and study abroad” by Ms. Chea Vimean Bopha, Forte Insurance

  1. “How open data develops business opportunities in Cambodia” by Thy Try, Executive Director of Open Development Cambodia

  1. “Understanding Facebook Instant Article” by Mr. Meng Edet, Founder of Mungkolkar

  1. “Using Smart Phone to make video” by Ms. At Sotheavy Lead of Innovation LAB of Development Innovation

  1. “Marketing Strategy for Startup Business” by Mr. Hak Kimthong, Founder of Kumnith Creative

During these talks, participants got the chance to rub shoulders with the experts and learn a lot of invaluable information from their experiences that they can apply in their existing or future ventures.

Besides that, Barcamp Angkor 2017 would also like to warmly thank those who put in a huge hardwork and effort into making this edition such a success. These people include the 15 local volunteers and organizers who took time out to help, as well as organizations, such as the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport for the support, Smart Axiata, and Ezecom for supporting this event financially, Build Bright University for helping to organise this event and lastly, other partners involved in helping to successfully run the event. Despite the small number of volunteers, they managed to seamlessly run Barcamp Angkor 2017, showing their high level of expertise and professionalism.

We are certainly looking forward to the subsequent editions of this successful Barcamp event  series and the exciting content they are sure to provide in the future.
