Are you one to be dazzled by the mysteries and wonder of space? Do you find yourself researching on the various secrets that the galaxy and universe hold? Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP)’s Faculty of Science is holding an International Astronomical Workshop, definitely not to be missed!
The workshop will take place on 12 January, from 8:00AM onwards. It will feature the following speakers:
Prof. Dr. Michele Gerbaldi, Associated Researcher, IAP, France.
Prof. Dr. Hakim L. Malasan, Astronomy Division & Bosscha Observatory, FMIPA, ITB, Indonesia.
Mr. Tith Pros, Graduate, Master Program in Physics, RUPP.
Dr. Gerbaldi will be speaking about “A 3D map of the Milky Way with the space mission Gaia”. In December 2013, the European Space Agency’s Gaia satellite launched into space. As of now, it is 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. Using current technology, it is mapping more than one thousand million objects. Its goal? To produce the most accurate 3D map of the Milky Way.
In its five years of operation in space, it will carry out many observations. Armed with a billion-pixel camera, Gaia will discover thousands of suns, stars and more.
Dr. Gerbaldi’s lecture will describe how the spacecraft will last the five year mission. He will also describe how this huge data analysis project worlds. In time to come, the Gaia’s data archive will equal about 250,000 DVDs worth of data.
