In today’s ever evolving digital age, Cambodians are increasingly becoming a more technologically savvy lot, catching up with global digital trends.
According to social media agency We Are Social’s latest report, Cambodia took the top spot in the growth of active Internet users among countries in Asia Pacific, with a 414 per cent increase since January 2014. This means a whopping 3.80 million Cambodians are now active users on the net!
Out of the 15.41 million people who live in this Kingdom of Wonder, a third of them currently have access to the Internet. As of March 2015, there are 2.40 million active social media users in Cambodia, with a 16% penetration rate (a.k.a percentage of population on the net); a 100 per cent rise since January 2014!
And all thanks to mobile phones, this trend is likely here to stay.
The smartphone industry is sweeping over Cambodia by storm, with more locals jumping on the bandwagon to own phones that can be used to access the Internet. Currently, mobile phones have the most share of web traffic amongst other devices like laptops or desktop computers in Cambodia.
One main reason for this dominance could be its affordable price tag, compared to other tech gadgets. Even mobile connections are relatively low-priced, with 94% of the people in Cambodia paying for these fees in advance. Compare this to Singapore, for example, where only 42% of mobile connections are pre-paid.
