Happy 2018 from Geeks In Cambodia!

Happy New Year from Geeks In Cambodia! As we enter 2018, there is definitely no better way to celebrate and bask in the brand new year but to look back on some of the great moments and highlights of 2017! Firstly, we would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to all those who have been reading our articles and showing your support throughout.

For Geeks In Cambodia, 2017 definitely presented a whole list of wonderful milestones. This year marked the fourth anniversary of our platform and in August, Geeks In Cambodia even got the opportunity to be part of the judging panel for the prestigious Cambodia ICT Awards (CICTA) semi-finals, in the Digital Content Category.

Most notably, 2017 was also the year Geeks in Cambodia started fully developing its upcoming project, Startup Cambodia, which is set to be released pretty soon! For those of you who may not be too sure of what Startup Cambodia is, it is an online, interactive and collaborative platform that aims to provide easy and free access to accurate, up-to-date and valuable information, as well as data, in regards to the flourishing startup ecosystem in Cambodia.

The platform covers 3 different objectives – Connecting, Supporting and Informing all the relevant players in the ecosystem; ranging from startups themselves, investors, event spaces and son on. We are definitely very excited to release this platform officially, so as to help create a more united and connected startup scene in the Kingdom!

Furthermore, as Cambodia’s first news platform fully dedicated to reporting news about startups and new technologies, we surely got the opportunity to cover many awesome events and stories all throughout the year. If you want to catch up on some of the hottest news of 2017 and get inspired, here are some of the interesting articles you should check out:

  1. SmartStart Programme Series

As one of our longest series of articles this year, we documented the whole SmartStart programme since its launch in February and we are still continuing to dish out a series of interviews with the Top 5 winners! We kicked the SmartStart series off with Phase 1 of the programme, which consisted of a fun 2-day Hackathon. Then, we moved on to covering the final pitches of the teams in Phase 2 and this was where the final 5 were announced.

As the teams moved onto the incubation phase to further turn their ideas into a stellar reality, we at Geeks in Cambodia got to catch up with the winners for some in-depth interviews about their journeys thus far and their future plans. So far, we interviewed Prestige Gift, Spare and GoSoccer and we will be releasing Ligo’s interview as well in the weeks to come, so do remember to look out for that!

  1. Smart Axiata Digital Innovation Fund (SADIF) Series

We first introduced the Smart Axiata Digital Innovation Fund earlier this March, outlining what the fund seeks to do and provide for the startup and tech ecosystem found in the Kingdom at the moment. Then, in November, we gave you the details of Forte Insurance’s partnership with SADIF, as well as the exciting announcement of the first batch of  SADIF investees.

From there, we did a trio of interviews with SADIF investees from Aniwaa, Joonaak Delivery and Morakot. Do take a look at their individual articles as they have a wealth of insights and experiences to impart!

  1. Technovation Interviews

Apart from doing a retrospective article on Technovation 2017, we also got the chance to get up close and personal with the young and innovative female minds behind the apps created for the competition. This year, we got to have a chat with 3 top teams– The Square Bracket and Girls for 2Morrow from the Senior Division in June, as well as Techlifestyle from the Junior Division later on in the year.

  1. Startup and Entrepreneur Interviews

This year, we got to hear the many voices of the amazing and passionate local entrepreneurs and tech experts in the Kingdom! In May, we got to hear from Leap Sok, the founder of System Experts Asia, Chantra Be, Managing Partner of Emerald Hub and Rithy Thul, an investor of BookMeBus and Promoter of SmallWorld about their thoughts on the Mekong Startup Ecosystem.

Apart from that, in November, we got to meet up with Sopheakmonkol Sok, CEO and Co-Founder of Codingate; who shared the Sokhakrom App’s successes so far and even some personal stories that have helped to heighten the inspiration behind his company’s growth. He even shared about his recent International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) trip, in which he attended with 5 other techies from the Kingdom! We have an upcoming article in relation to that whole IVLP trip as well, so do keep your eyes peeled for that.

Also, with the new year ushering in brand new changes, it is good to stay updated with the latest trends within the digital sphere; especially if you are an entrepreneur or startup innovator!

Hence, we have prepared articles that can help equip you with tips and tricks to stay relevant in this ever-changing landscape this year. As per usual, we released our annual social media and digital statistics of 2017 in Cambodia earlier in February where we covered various digital insights across different online platforms, which you can read here.

Also, with Facebook’s unveiling of the Explore Feed in the Kingdom 2 months ago, we crafted this cohesive article to summarise the new changes and how businesses can continue leveraging on Facebook creatively, despite the brand new implementations.

So with that, we thank you once again for journeying with us this year and do continue to stay tuned to our platform as we are expecting to see a jam-packed year with a lot of interesting and exciting things in store!

We will also be kicking off the year with a startup competition in partnership with Outpost Cambodia, which we will be announcing tomorrow so make sure you come check it out then!
