FIRST LEAN LAUNCHPAD IN CAMBODIA A SUCCESS

Lean Launchpad, a three day program that gives high school students opportunities to innovate and come up with inspiring and impactful ideas, took place from 10 to 12 October as a part of BarCamp Phnom Penh 2019.

90 students ranging from ages 13 to 15 worked in teams and tried to create solutions to tackle environmental conservation and education.

During the first two days, participants had a hands-on introduction to the innovative, entrepreneurial mindset by being introduced to ideation, rapid prototyping and pitching.

10 finalists had been selected on 12 October, when they pitched their ideas to their peers and a panel of jurors. Top 6 teams had been chosen to pitch their ideas on 13 October at BarCamp Phnom Penh 2019 next to some of Cambodia’s most promising startups.

The 6 final teams pitched ideas like a drone delivery services quickly and efficiently transporting blood, aimed on reducing the amount of people that die from blood loss in Cambodia.

The final winner of the Lean Launchpad programme was a group called “Big Dream”. Through their open-source website, they hope to help teachers in rural areas learn through step by step videos on how to engage their students and raise their interests towards learning.

“I really hope that everything we’ve shared over these two days, can let them think about the topics, education and environment, and potentially to take action on those elements,” says Giovanni Corradini, the Regional summit manager for the Asia Summit.

Doris Clemenz, Head of programs for Seedstar Myanmar says that she hopes the participants will take what they’ve learnt and be able to implement it into their lives and their future paths.

To wrap up the Lean Launchpad pitches, organizers added three tech-talks. “Building a Culture of Rapid Innovation” by Donnie Prakaso from Amazon Web Service, “Transforming Barriers into Conveniences” by Hashim Alkaff from Grab Cambodia, and finally “Breakthrough Digital Leadership” by Thian Woon Foong from Leaderonomics.

The first ever Lean Launchpad was run by Seedstars, Smart Axiata, MPTC, MoEYS and NIPTICT.
