DEVELOPMENT INNOVATIONS EXPO 2019: CELEBRATING SIX YEARS OF HARD WORK

The Development Innovations Expo 2019 saw over 40 organisations, tech companies, social enterprises and young innovators who have employed innovative solutions to help tackle Cambodia’s development challenges.

The event was organised by Development Innovations (DI), a six-year USAID-funded project aiming to help young innovators, social enterprises, technology companies and civil society organisations to design and use information and communications technology (ICT) solutions.

The event was a celebration of all the people, organisations, businesses, products and programmes that have been a part of that journey.

Participants had a chance to join various workshops, talks and panel discussions including workshops on holograms and infographics, talks such as “Fostering Curiosity and Resourcefulness through Coding: A Coding Cats Case Study” and “The Evolution of BarCamp in Cambodia”. Panel discussions covered topics like “Fundraising Strategies – Outside the Box” and “Mentorship in the Digital Age”.

Booths representing the various projects that Development Innovations has supported.

Attendees could also visit exhibitions and discover some of the ventures working with Development Innovations, from education projects to different apps, focused on commerce, travelling or even combating illegal deforestation.

Working towards closing the gender gap in the ICT field and ensuring both men and women have the necessary skills and mindsets to design solutions for the digital future of Cambodia have also been a significant parts of the project.

Two of the programs that USAID supports are “WE Act”, a Pact project, and “Women in TEK” by The Asia Foundation and Tek4Good. Both aim to help young women entrepreneurs in Cambodia to reach their full potential, teaching them how to strengthen their skills and connect with other businesses.

Since 2014, DI has helped Cambodians design and develop 70 new technology solutions that have reached over 1.5 million people across the country. The project provided civil society actors opportunities to connect with the tech sector, design and use ICTs to address critical development challenges for Cambodian citizens.
