Instagram mobile app, featuring photo sharing and social networking, has become very popular in the past two years. Initially available on IOS devices only, an Android version was released around one year ago few time before the breaking news of their being acquired by Facebook was revealed.
Today, Instagram counts :
- 100 million Monthly Active Users
- 40 million Photos Per Day
- 8500 Likes Per Second
- 1000 Comments Per Second
The app is also undeniably very popular across Asia, as Kevin Systrom, co-founder at Instagram, reported on Quora in 2011 “You may encounter more content from Asian users (on Instagram) because of the language-agnostic characteristics of photos (you don’t need to speak Japanese to enjoy photos from Japanese people)”.
In 2012, the use of Instagram experienced an increase of 132 % in Hong Kong, and reached the huge rate of 8 121 % growth in Singapore. In Thailand, Instagram users reached the number of 153,582 in 2012.
In Cambodia the hashtag for “Cambodia” gets more than 260 000 photos on Instagram, and “Cambodian food” one around 10 000.
Travelers taking photos across Asia, and professional photographers based in Asia, sharing their work and passion through networks such as Instagram or Pinterest, also participate in rising popularity on these networks.
Also, in Asia, those kind of social platforms, relying on visuals, are considered to be great resources to drive users trafic. Indeed, as statistics can show, a lot of trafic in Asia is acquired from Instagram in direction to other social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter for example. That’s one of the reason why Picture marketing also experiences a growth here, especially in the e-commerce sector.
As Confucius would say “A picture is worth thousand words”, well marketers seem to have understood this very well !
